For anyone coming in a little late to the game (no pun intended) the new Xbox One coming out on November 22nd is probably sold out everywhere for preorder, unfortunately. But that doesn’t mean you absolutely won’t be able to get one for Christmas. You may have some options still available.
Stores have been taking pre-order for Xbox One for a few months, since the original release date was announced. By ordering early, many buyers were able to get an Xbox One Day One Console. You can also place orders on some sites like Amazon to be notified when they have Xbox One in stock, either late December or January 2014. But that’s no consolation for buyers who are hoping to treat the family to a new Xbox One console under the Christmas Tree.
It’s unlikely that buying an Xbox One online is an option for December delivery. But there are a couple options for very patient buyers. Many big box retailers and some other brick and mortar stores will have Xbox One consoles available for first come, first served buyers on release day. For example, Best Buy has posted on its website that stores will have limited consoles in stock in addition to those available for pre-order buyers. They state clearly however that there is no guarantee that a certain number of consoles will be available at any given store, and that quantity may vary from store to store. But if you are looking for a console, you may want to contact a local store a couple days before release day to see if they can provide any information.
Most other big retailers will likely have the same situation. Along with Best Buy, stores like Target, WalMart, Game Stop, Sears, Kmart and others are all selling the Xbox One. You can contact local stores to find out if they will have extra consoles available for sale.
The next issue will be whether you want to wait in line on midnight of the 21st to be able to grab one of the consoles that might be available! For some gamers, it might be worth it if they missed the window for pre-ordering Xbox One. But you will have to decide for yourself whether it’s important that you get the console on the first day.
Now, many gamers, even serious gamers, are not buying on the first day. The Xbox One console is the most expensive at $499, and since it’s not backward compatible, gamers have to buy all new games and controllers. If you play with a certain group of friends, remember that unless they ALL have Xbox One, you won’t all be able to play together. That’s not so say there aren’t some great games coming out too, some exclusive, for the Xbox One, including Titanfall, and versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts and Assassins Creed IV Black Flag.
You may want to do what many players are doing, which is wait until 2014 to order your Xbox One, when they are available everywhere, and you have paid off some of your Christmas bills. If you don’t have an Xbox 360, they are super affordable now, and Microsoft is going to be supporting it for three more years. Developers too will be releasing new games for the 360 platform. For the family that wants an Xbox under the tree, the Xbox 360 might be worth a look.
The Xbox One might be hard to find, but it’s still possible, if you take some time to check around first, and don’t mind camping out in line a few hours before release night!
